SKIN
The skin is an organ that is our first line of defense against irritants and disease and is 70% water. It absorbs sunlight and converts it to vitamin D, it helps you detox through sweat glands and protects you from injury and foreign invaders. You feel with the skin and the nerves it contains. We also absorb our nutrients and eliminate toxins through it. In just one square inch there are 19 million cells, 650 sweat glands, 100 oil (sebum) glands, 65 hair follicles, 19,000 sensory cells and around 13 feet of blood vessels. (go see the Human Body Exhibit and you’ll see for yourself how amazing it is) It is made of the Epidermis (thin outer layer that is always growing and sloughing off old cells- over 40lbs of cells in one lifetime are shed) the Dermis, the middle layer and the Subcutaneous tissue which is the innermost layer and consists mostly of fats. It is a shock absorber giving the skin flexibility, insulation, and protects the internal organs. This layer diminishes over time which causes wrinkles and sagging. Adding healthy fat to your diet can help maintain this layer: coconut, avocados, raw nuts and seeds). Doing a periodic cleanse can help reduce the accumulated toxins and improve the health of your skin
